Coast Guard continues flood operations, shifts to Oslo |

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Coast Guard along with Oslo, Minn., and Marshall County emergency responders are staging efforts to respond in Oslo, Friday, April 4, 2009, as part of the Red River flood response operation. Two Coast Guard 18-foot airboats and crews are underway searching flood-affected areas in Oslo. The crews are conducting welfare checks and in some instances delivering medical supplies. The Coast Guard has begun demobilizing units that responded to the flooding operations in Grand Forks and Fargo, N.D., as water levels on the Red River in flood affected areas continue to fall. "Although we are demobilizing some units, we are still committed to ensuring the safety of the residents affected by the flooding," said Cmdr. Mark Cunningham, deputy commander of Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River. "We are monitoring the situation and continuing to provide support to the counties and state. The dedication of our personnel and our inter-agency cooperation have greatly contributed to the success of this mission. We are part of a very skilled and highly-motivated team led by the states of North Dakota and Minnesota, including FEMA, the Department of Defense, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and numerous other agencies and volunteers." As of today, the Coast Guard has rescued 103 people, 15 dogs, 15 cats and numerous other animals from flood-affected areas.
