Coast Guard continues flood response operations in North Dakota

ST. LOUIS - The Coast Guard, along with other federal, state and local agencies, continues operations in flood-affected areas in North Dakota along the Red River and its tributaries.

Coast Guard aircrews and boatcrews have conducted several patrols of flood-affected areas along the Sheyenne, Red, and James rivers and have rescued two adult females since Monday, April 16, 2009.

Coast Guard crews have been deployed to Emergency Operations Centers in North Dakota to coordinate response efforts with local and state officials.

Coast Guard assets responding are:

A Disaster Assistance Response Team from Marine Safety Detatchment St. Paul, Minn., staged in Tower City, N.D.
A DART from MSD Quad Cities in Rock Island, Ill., is staged in Enderlin, N.D.

Coast Guard rescues 2 from flood-affected areas in Lisbon

ST. LOUIS - As of 4:45 p.m. the Coast Guard has rescued two adult females from flood-affected areas in Lisbon, N.D.

An airboat crew from Station Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., accompanied by two U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service airboats, a Coast Guard Disaster Assistance Response Team, and a smallboat from Coast Guard Cutter Scioto rescued a mother and daughter from their adjacent mobile homes when flood waters from the Sheyenne River began flowing between them.

The boat crews were conducting training in a flooded field approximately 7 miles northeast of Lisbon, N.D., when a man approached them notifying them of the two women in distress.

The Coast Guard airboat then rescued the women and transferred them to Ransom County sheriffs, who brought them safely to a shelter at Lisbon High School.

Due to current high-water conditions in the Sheyenne River and the expected high-water conditions in the Red River, the Coast Guard is working with various federal, state and local agencies in preparation of flood operations.

Coast Guard crews have been deployed to Emergency Operations Centers in North Dakota to coordinate response efforts with local and state officials.

Coast Guard maintains safety zone on the Red River
ST LOUIS - The Coast Guard continues to maintain a safety zone on the Red River from Cass and Wilkin counties to Pembina and Kittson counties. All vessel traffic, including canoes, is restricted from transitting the Red River, except for search and rescue and law enforcement vessels due to safety concerns and flooding. Coast Guard continues flood operations, shifts to Oslo
GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Coast Guard along with Oslo, Minn., and Marshall County emergency responders are staging efforts to respond in Oslo, Friday, April 4, 2009, as part of the Red River flood response operation. Two Coast Guard 18-foot airboats and crews are underway searching flood-affected areas in Oslo. The crews are conducting welfare checks and in some instances delivering medical supplies. The Coast Guard has begun demobilizing units that responded to the flooding operations in Grand Forks and Fargo, N.D., as water levels on the Red River in flood affected areas continue to fall. "Although we are demobilizing some units, we are still committed to ensuring the safety of the residents affected by the flooding," said Cmdr. Mark Cunningham, deputy commander of Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River. "We are monitoring the situation and continuing to provide support to the counties and state. The dedication of our personnel and our inter-agency cooperation have greatly contributed to the success of this mission. We are part of a very skilled and highly-motivated team led by the states of North Dakota and Minnesota, including FEMA, the Department of Defense, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and numerous other agencies and volunteers." As of today, the Coast Guard has rescued 103 people, 15 dogs, 15 cats and numerous other animals from flood-affected areas.
